Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has called for developing relations with Syria’s new authorities at the 17th ECO Summit, Report reported from liberated Khankendi on July 4.
Erdoğan, along with leaders of several other ECO member countries, including Pakistan, Iran and Uzbekistan, are meeting in the liberated Azerbaijani city of Khankendi in a test of the Azerbaijani government’s recently built infrastructure, including a new airport.
“The new stage, which resulted from the people’s many years of struggle in Syria, creates hopes for the region,” Erdoğan said during his address at the Economic Cooperation Organisation summit.
Turkey’s government has backed the new al-Sharaa administration before the collapse of the Assad regime in December 2024 by supporting the fledgling administration in its ruling of liberated Idlib province.
He described the current period as “critical and important for continuing the international community’s financial support on this issue and developing relations with the new leadership (of Syria)”.
Erdoğan also said: “We must also support the security, peace and development of Afghanistan, which is important for the region.”
The Turkish president expressed condolences during the summit regarding the terrorist attack that occurred in Pakistan several days ago.
