Turkey would like to improve ties with Israel,” President Tayyip Erdogan said. But the Turkish president said that his country could not accept Israel’s policies toward the Palestinians, in remarks to reporters in Friday in Istanbul.
“The Palestine policy is our red line. It is impossible for us to accept Israel’s Palestine policies. Their merciless acts there are unacceptable,” Erdogan said of his country’s former ally.
Erdogan confirmed that Turkey and Israel continued to share intelligence, however.
Turkey expelled Israel’s ambassador in 2018 over Gaza border clashes that left dozens dead and also over the move of the US embassy to Jerusalem. Israel also expelled Turkey’s envoy. Prior to that, in 2010, Turkey halted diplomatic relations after 10 Turkish activists were killed by Israeli commandos who intercepted the Mavi Marmara, part of a flotilla attempting to break Israel’s blockade of Gaza.
